thankyouThe wee early hours of the morning.

As I sit here thinking about The Savannah Quill convention today, I am excited, and reflecting about what brought me to this point.

Life is a series of events, not one monumental event.

As a kid, both my mom and dad loved reading. They would take us to the library, and to used book stores. Reading was a low cost form of entertainment and there were always books around the house. I fell in love with Isaac Asimov’s books and Piers Anthony. I also read The Uncanny X-Men, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Incredible Hulk comics a lot.

I remember back to grade school winning some sort of writing award in either 2nd or 3rd grade, and being part of a contest, which began my love for writing, but I did not know it at the time. It was not a big deal to me then. Just another school award. Hey, I was a kid, what did I know? Hahah!

We studied Shakespeare my entire senior year in AP English with Mr. Beach at Dixie Heights High School. I was also a library assistant for the entire year and spent my 2 study halls there as well for fun, mostly hanging out with my friends, not reading.

When I first met my wife, we would go on dates to Barnes & Noble in Wichita looking at books and enjoying cheesecake. Twenty years later, we have three awesome children, and a great marriage. I thank God for my wife and children!

When I started college, I spent hours upon hours studying and reading the text books, and anything and everything I could get my hands on about leadership and entrepreneurship. I started a lot of little side jobs to make extra money doing small businesses part time. I continued my education and finished my undergrad in Business Administration, finished a Masters in Business Administration, and then a Masters in Information Systems.

Just celebrated my third year writing for Do Savannah as a columnist in September, and it has been a great experience freelancing for them and other SMN publications.

Last year I wanted to do something to tie in my writing and love for reading and The Savannah Quill idea came about. I’ve worked as staff on different conventions and events since 2013, mostly as a photographer, social media specialist, communications specialist, and event coordinator. The challenges of coordinating an event have been a great learning experience. I started the indie mag with interviews, edutainment pieces, and featuring work of indies, and it has been a learning curve as well.

Working with the Live Oak Public Libraries to support literacy in our community means a lot to me.

Today marks a milestone for me with the convention. What started out as an idea has grown into a big family of creatives. I have done my best to get people together who are kind-hearted, caring, and compassionate. I put people first, and I truly believe the people involved with the Quill are People first as well. I am honored by all of the support, involvement, and enthusiasm. My wife, children, family, and friends are just the best!

Today marks a great day for me and I thank you all for allowing me to do it!
